Scope of business

Environmental education is a fundamental part of our effort to operate in an environmentally friendly manner. Our education officers work on projects identified by our Corporate Social Responsibilities team and their work involves visiting schools, businesses and community groups; giving talks; leading walks; producing educational resources; and developing innovative ways to educate society about sustainable development, environmental protection, energy use and climate change issues.

Scope of role

The range of activities carried out by our education officers varies greatly. Some work mainly with schools, giving talks, taking part in other classroom-based activities or leading fieldtrips. Other education officers assist with the training of volunteers and community groups involved in environmental work. Some work on secondment with the Geode Corporate Trust. You will be based at our Leeds office but will need the flexibility to travel to locations nationally.

Responsibilities / Activities

  • Producing educational resources aimed at different groups of all ages, including schools, youth groups, community groups and businesses.
  • Delivering educational talks and presentations to different groups.
  • Facilitating a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential.
  • Liaising and networking with contacts in schools, the local education authority (LEA), community groups, other environmental organisations and local businesses.
  • Organising events and activities to raise awareness of environmental issues.
  • Training others, such as teachers, in the use of resources and delivering environmental education sessions.
  • Researching and collating scientific data for educational purposes.
  • Recruiting, supervising and working with volunteers from the Geode Corporate Trust.
  • Acting as a point of contact for teachers, educationalists and colleagues, responding to their requests for information on educational issues.

Skills required

  • To have attained, or be likely to attain, at least a 2.i (upper second class) degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Must be willing to undertake and pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
  • Experience of supporting children and / or adults in an educational environment.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education is desirable.
  • Must have a passion for the environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to build and develop internal and external relationships.
  • Well organised and able to manage time effectively.
  • A record of being able to work in a team.
  • ICT skills and a commitment to on-going training.
  • Ability to lead or support field trips is desirable.
  • Applicants must have a first aid qualification or be willing to undergo first aid training.
  • A positive and optimistic outlook and a good sense of humour.

 

Pay for this graduate position is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
