An environmental impact advisor assesses the environmental impact of past and current activities of our clients. Working on commercial or governmental contracts, they cover a wide range of issues such as assessment of air, land and water contamination, environmental impact assessments, environmental audits, waste management, the development of environmental policy and environmental management systems.A career as an environmental impact advisor offers the opportunity for a structured professional path with the potential to specialise in an area of interest.
Scope of role
Your key task is to identify whether land, air or water is contaminated, by means of desk-based research and fieldwork. You will then undertake an assessment to identify if the contaminant will have an adverse impact on receptors (such as humans or groundwater). Your findings will be passed onto the client in the form of a report or presentation, including innovative advice on how to tackle the problems.
Responsibilities / Activities
- Conducting field surveys: collecting data to establish a baseline condition for levels of pollution or contamination for a site.
- Interpreting data: detailed assessment of information, using software-modelling packages to identify whether 'contamination' exists in accordance with current legislation.
- Report writing: completion of detailed scientific reporting, written or presented in a manner that can be understood by non-technical people.
- Communicating with clients, regulators and sub-contractors.
- Managing legislative issues for clients and maintaining an awareness of how legislation impacts upon their projects.
- Researching previous incidents on sites to provide information to clients considering purchase; undertaking fieldwork to identify previous activities on the site and any previous contamination events.
Skills required
- To have attained, or be likely to attain, at least a 2.i (upper second class) degree in a relevant discipline.
- MSc in Environmental Management or Environmental Science preferred (or a willingness to work towards this qualification on appointment as part of our 3-year Graduate Training Programme).
- Work experience in relevant field preferred.
- A demonstrable passion for the environment is essential.
- Must have an awareness of the ethical and legal issues associated with environmental management.
- Excellent communicator both in report writing and in oral presentations.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
- Must be proficient in the use of software-modelling packages.
- Must have the ability to build and develop internal and external relationships.
- Well organised and able to manage time effectively.
- Experience in managing multiple projects preferred.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team (acting as its leader when required).
