Scope of business

Geographic information systems (GIS) are a fast-growing and important part of our business and our clients’ businesses. We always aim to provide our clients with accurate schematics of the locations in which they work and consequently our planning team requires another GIS specialist to work on a diverse range of projects.

Scope of role

GIS are computerised systems used for the collection, storage, analysis, manipulation and presentation of complex geographical information, relevant to most sectors of government and commerce. All of our GIS officers are involved in the production of data and analysis to help plan and deliver services or products to our clients. You will be based at our Edinburgh office but will need the flexibility to travel to sites nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities / Activities

  • Collection of geographical information in a digital form.
  • Desk-based data capture (digitising) to convert paper maps into GIS datasets (for example, to record the location of telecoms cables or water pipelines from original maps).
  • Storage, analysis and presentation of geographical information.
  • Creating and maintaining the structures necessary for GIS data storage.
  • Developing the tools for loading and transferring GIS data between different systems.
  • Manipulation, analysis and presentation of geographical information by creating programs to convert GIS information from one format into another.
  • Using tools to join together different GIS datasets and create new information or investigate patterns (e.g. to estimate the number of people potentially affected by an industrial accident).

Skills required

  • To have attained, or be likely to attain, at least a 2.i (upper second class) degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Skilled and experienced in the use of GIS systems, such as ArcView.
  • MSc in Geographic Information Systems preferred (or a willingness to work towards this qualification on appointment as part of our 3-year Graduate Training Programme).
  • Work experience in relevant field preferred.
  • Ability to research, analyse and evaluate complex issues for internal management consumption.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communicator both in report writing and in oral presentations.
  • Ability to build and develop internal and external relationships.
  • Well organised and able to manage time effectively.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team (acting as its leader when required).
