Environmental accidents can happen and it is therefore important that we have a dedicated team of people who can help to minimise the chance of these accidents occurring and be there to mitigate their impact when they do. Hazards can range from small-scale pollution of local water sources to large-scale environmental disasters. Regardless of its size, all efforts are made by our hazard prevention and management officers to minimise the impact of accidents and prevent them happening in the future.

Scope of the role

You will work as part of our hazard prevention and management team to evaluate possible hazards continually and work with clients towards minimising the chance of accidents occurring. This will involve using innovative methods and techniques to assist our clients with their safeguarding procedures. You will be based at our Ayr office but will need the flexibility to travel to locations nationally and internationally at very short notice.

Responsibilities / Activities

  • Writing and implementing safety development plans and reports.
  • Providing advice and consultancy to clients to ensure that they can carry on functioning in the event of an emergency.
  • Completing risk assessments for a diverse range of sites, such as chemical factories, nuclear factories and city centres.
  • Analysing and planning for potential risks, such as technical failure of electricity networks, major fuel leaks and severe weather conditions.
  • Acting as duty officer as part of a 24-hour rota, responding to emergency situations as they arise.
  • Liaising with technical staff to come up with practical hazard prevention schemes.
  • Responding to emergencies, assessing the situation and level of response required.
  • Communicating with emergency services and other bodies in the event of an emergency.
  • Working with a range of agencies to ensure that support for local communities continues in the event of an emergency.
  • Delivering safety training to staff in local authorities, businesses, voluntary agencies and other organisations.
  • Developing new policies and procedures in response to government legislation.

Skills required

  • To have attained, or be likely to attain, at least a 2.i (upper second class) degree in a relevant discipline.
  • MSc in Disaster Management for Environmental Hazards or similar preferred (or a willingness to work towards this qualification on appointment as part of our 3-year Graduate Training Programme).
  • Candidates should be able to work well under pressure and take decisive action.
  • Work experience in relevant field preferred.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communicator both in report writing and in oral presentations.
  • Ability to build and develop internal and external relationships.
  • Well organised and able to manage time effectively.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team (acting as its leader when required).
  • Applicants must have a first aid qualification or be willing to undergo first aid training.
