BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

Student Placement Profiles

Student Name:

Courtney

Programme of Study:

Museum Studies (MA) 2016-2017 Academic Year

Career/ Sector Interests:

I’ve done a lot of archive and preservation work in the past, so I knew that I’d be well-suited for this placement. Although I’d like to move out of archival work eventually and into some facet of collection managing, I think archive work is a good stepping stone to a variety of museum and/or gallery positions.

Placement Venue:

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

Placement Duration (30 or 12 days):

30 days (June- July 2017)

What type of activities did you undertake whilst you were on placement?

On an average day, I would mostly work on digitizing the back-log of old exhibition documents. I also did some library work, like cataloguing new books and reshelving. However, I was included in a lot of different tasks within the Library-Archives throughout my placement and got to try out a variety of odd jobs.

What were you placement highlights?

I was fortunate enough to have my placement during the installation and opening of a large exhibition at BALTIC. So I got to see, and be a part of, all the excitement and scrambling that happens just before an exhibition opening. The highlight of my placement was assisting with the filming and production of the artist interview videos. I got to meet the artists, and the videos I helped create were shown alongside the exhibition. I also enjoyed photographing a pop-up event run by the Learning Team.
