How do you do it?

Students are given a document that outlines the aims and tasks involved in a Scientific Report assignment. The document also includes the Mark criteria that will be used to applied to the assignment. The mark criteria gives guidance about what is required in order to achieve the requirements of each category. The level of detail for the mark criteria depends on the level of student independence required. At later stages it might not be provided in advance. Students complete the assignment and I use the criteria to mark the work, indicating what is missing from each assignment by putting a cross by the criteria. If appropriate, I can add bespoke comments on the marking document.

Why do you do it?

As a way of providing quick and detailed feedback

Does it work?

Giving the students the marking criteria in advance of them doing the assignment has improved the quality of their submissions. It is an effective and efficient means of marking a large number of assignments.
