Acidosis usually refers to the processes leading up to the state of low [[blood|blood]] [[pH|pH]] in the [[blood plasma|blood plasma]] or less commonly in bodily tissues. Respiratory acidosis occurs when the levels of [[carbon dioxide|carbon dioxide]] in the blood are too high and is usually caused by the body's inability to remove sufficent quantities by breathing. Metabollic acidosis can develop when acid quantities build up to a dangerous level in the body which is most commonly caused by the kidneys not removing acid at a sufficient rate.<ref>MedlinePlus Acidosis- http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001181.htm 11/07/2013</ref>

Common causes of metabollic acidosis can be; dehydration, [[aspirin|aspirin]] poisoning and kidney disease.<br>
