This particular formation of hypoxanthine can result in mutation in transcription or DNA replication because hypoxanthine has similar structure to guanine; thus, hypoxanthine will be read as guanine and will form hydrogen bond with cytosine<ref>Berg JM, Tymoczko JL, Stryer L.
