G1 phase, also known as the Gap 1 phase, is one of the stages within [[Interphase|interphase]]. This stage of the [[Cell cycle|cell cycle]] happens directly after [[Mitosis|mitosis]] and is a key point in which the decision is made as to whether another round of cell division will occur<ref>Alberts, B et al. This stage can vary hugely in length as the cell will only enter the next stage in the cell cycle, [[S phase|S phase]], if there are sufficient growth factor signals telling the cell to progress. Some cells that do not recieve all the necessary signals will move into the [[G0 phase|G0 phase]], where they will remain until cell division is triggered by the prescence of [[Cyclins|cyclins]]. Other cells will enter terminal differentiation which means that they will not divide again and they have reached their most specific state. During the G1 phase the cell grows and monitors both the internal and external environments to make sure that conditions are suitable for cell division to take place.
