Nuclear fission is where the nucleus of an atom is split in two. This is done by the addition of a neutron to the nucleus which initiates nuclear fission which also releases neutrons and produces a chain reaction causing the nuclear fission of more atoms. This reaction is used in nuclear power as it is very exothermic and subsequently releases a lot of heat energy which can be used to produce steam[1].
