The glial cell forming a myelin sheath around axons in the central nervous system[1]. However, there are also oligodendrocytes found in the grey matter and they have so far unknown functions possibly similar to astrocytes. There are also gap junctions connecting oligodendrocytes which are composed by connexins. Mutated connexin proteins can cause hypomyelination and various pathologies like leukodystrophies[2].
