A carboxyl group is an organic functional group [1] which is made up of a carbon atom, an oxygen atom and a hydroxyl group. The carboxyl group is often seen as -COOH [2]. The oxygen atom is double bonded to the carbon atom, but the carbon is bonded to the hydroxy group by a single bond. Carboxyl groups can make up carboxylic acids which is the carboxyl group attached to an R group [3]. The R group can be any chemical species [4].

- The carboxyl group is polar due to the difference in electronegativity between the carbon and the oxygen.
- The carboxyl group have a high melting and boiling point.
