A functional group is a group of atoms in a molecule which are the centre of reactivity and therefore provide it's chemical characteristics [1] . The functional group is also a portion of the molecule that makes it distictive/more easily identifiable, as any molecules which share the same functional group will have undergone/can undergo the same chemical reactions.[2]
