A carboxyl group is an organic functional group[1]. which is made up of a carbon atom, an oxygen atom and a hydroxyl group. The carboxyl group is often seen as -COOH[2]. The oxygen atom is double bonded to the carbon atom, but the carbon is bonded to the hydroxy group by a single bond. Carboxyl groups can make up carboxylic acids which is the carboxyl group attached to an R group[3]. The R group can be any chemical species[4].
