Hypomagnesaemia is a condition where the blood magnesium levels are abnormally low, due to electrolyte disturbances.

Looking at the disease on a cellular level

Transcellular transport creates an electrical gradient (where the basolateral membrane is negatively charged) for Mg2+ absorption via the paracellular pathway in the thick ascending Loop of Henle. This then causes magnesiun ions to be excreted in the urine.

Note that hypomagnesaemia is not the same as magnesium deficiency, as one can be present without the other [1].
