BamHI is a restriction endonuclease which recognises the sequence 'GGATCC' in a DNA strand. This enzyme cuts away from the symmetry centre in the 'GGATCC' sequence and this therefore results in fragments with sticky ends. Restriction endonucleases such as BamHI are particularly useful when carrying out restriction digests of DNA.
