Chloroplasts are organelles found in plants and some protists that carry out photosynthesis. They contain the pigment chlorophyll which is responsible for the green colour of the chloroplasts. When a photon hits a chlorophyll molecule within a chloroplast, a pair of electrons is excited and this is the start of the process of photosynthesis, eventually resulting in the production of sugars.
