Deoxyribonuclease or "DNase" is a phosphodiesterase that breaks the phosphodiester bonds in DNA and essentially cleaves/breaks down the DNA double helix strand. DNase is one of the key factors of apoptosis as it contributes to the breakdown of DNA within the nucleus[1].
