Amoxicilin or amoxycilin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It's a type of penicilin which works by binding to the penicilin binding protein 1A and preventing the bacteria from synthesing new bacterialcell walls causing cell lysis and preventing the synthesis of new bacteria.
Amoxicilin works mostly on gram positive bacteria and some gram negative bateria. However, amoxicilin doesn't work in B-lactamase producing bacteria which degrade the antibiotic. Therefore it is often prescribed with clavulanic acid which inhibits B-lactamase.
It's effective against Streptococci, E.coli, Pneumococci, and some strains of Staphylococci.
