In DNA, when a nucleotide sequence is the same or nearly the same[1] as another nucleotide sequence, they are known as homologues. These similar gene sequences will commonly express similarly functional protein sequences that can also be called homologous. Homologues found in different species often indicate evolutionarily conserved sequences. Such levels of conservation can be found in important functional regions such as enzyme active sites[2].
