Citrate carries acetyl groups

Fatty acids are synthesized in the cytoplasm, whereas acetyl CoA is formed from pyruvate in the mitochondria. Hence, acetyl CoA must be transferred from mitochondria to the cytoplasm for fatty acid synthesis.
