Stromatolites today are found in Australia, and were also found in fossilized in Africa dating back 3.5 billions of years ago. We know that Earth formed approximately4-4.5 billion of years ago. Therefore finding the remains of Stromatolites in Africa from 3.5 billions of years ago may show us that life on planet Earth evolved soon after the formation of the surface. Stromatolites are characterized by a large columnar structure. These structures are formed by microbial activity of cyanbacteria which secrete mineral obtained from the sea into a columnar structure [1].
