Bacterial chromosomes need to fit in a cellular compartment. In order for that to happen it is folded numerous times. The organization of these compartments is important so protein DNA translation can be easy. The procedure used to compact these bacterial chromosomes is DNA supercoiling. The molecule twists around itself and lets go of the helical stress, at that point supercoiling happens[1].
