Amoxicilin or amoxycilin is an used to treat various bacterial infections. It's a type of penicilin which works by binding to the penicilin binding protein 1A and preventing the bacteria from synthesing new bacterial cell walls causing cell lysis and preventing the synthesis of new bacteria [1].

Amoxicilin works mostly on gram positive bacteria and some gram negative bacteria. However, amoxicilin doesn't work in B-lactamase producing bacteria which degrade the antibiotic. Therefore it is often prescribed with clavulanic acid which inhibits B-lactamase[2].

It's effective againstStreptococci,E.coli, Pneumococci and some strains of Staphylococci [3]
