A substance that has a pH over 7 and reacts with water to produce OH- ions and with an acid to form H2O and a salt. Alkalis of known concentration can be used in a titration to identify an unknown concentration of an acid.

Brønsted-Lowry Base

A molecule that accepts H+.

Lewis Base

A molecule that donates a pair of electrons.
