Prokaryotes are organisms with cells which do not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles, such as mitochondria. These are different to eukaryotes which have a nucleus containing genetic information (DNA), and membrane bound organelles. Mostly prokaryotes are unicellular. Bacteria, such as Escherichia coli are prokaryotes.
