A transversion is a type of gentic mutation which involves a substitution of a single nucleotide in a strand of DNA. This subsequently leads to a mismatched base pair. A transversion involves replacing a pyrimidine for a purine or a purine for a pyrimidine. A pyrimidine is T (thymine) or C (cytosine). A purine is A (adenine) or G (guanine). Pyrimidine to purine transversions are T to A, T to G, C to A or C to G. Possible purine to pyrimidine transversions are A to T, A to C, G to T or G to C. In total there are eight possible different transversion substitiutions.
